Know Your Audience: The First Step of Care
Each country or region worldwide will have its traditions and cultures that affect every aspect of life. Within national contexts, specific regions, tribes, communities, and families will develop their own traditions and rituals that are as important, if not more so. These cultural nuances overlap into traction to crisis and trauma as well.
“Culture determines views about seeking help: where to go, who to see, what is helpful. The assumptions made about culture can become barriers to working effectively in peer support relationships” (Peer Engagement Guide). Because of this, caregivers need to do some preparation in order to provide care that will be most helpful.
